Frozen natural wonder in Hungary
According to 24.hu, the Ilona Valley Waterfall of Heves County in Hungary, cascading down from ten-meter tall andesite gorges, is the largest of its kind in Hungary.
The natural wonder, located south of Parádfürdő, flows abundantly in spring, making it a favourite destination among nature enthusiasts. But the captivating sight is also worth visiting in winter, especially when temperatures consistently drop below freezing point. Then, the waterfall gradually freezes, creating a true spectacle for a longer or shorter period, and that is exactly what happened on Saturday. Visitors will be able to see it for a couple more days, so you should hurry up if you don’t want to miss it.
Ilona Valley Waterfall is always a perfect choice for excursions
The Ilona Valley Waterfall is near the spa village of Parádfürdő, renowned for its therapeutic mineral waters, which have been popular for healing purposes since the early 18th century. Taking a trip to the waterfall and spending some days in Parádfürdő also offers the opportunity for you to explore the picturesque landscapes of the Mátra Mountain.

The waterfall cascades dramatically from a cliff, creating a breathtaking scene that is particularly enchanting in spring and early summer when the water flow is at its peak due to melting snow and rainfall. The surrounding area is rich in lush greenery and diverse flora, providing a serene environment for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained walking trails that lead to the waterfall, allowing for an immersive experience in this beautiful setting.
The sound of rushing water creates a calming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for relaxation or meditation. Many visitors take advantage of the location for picnics or photography, capturing the enchanting scenery that changes with the seasons—from vibrant greens in spring to golden hues in autumn and a magical ice landscape during winter.
